In West Bengal rice is still planted by hand. The families of most students at Dhrubotara do this seasonal work as day labourers on the land of others. These workers are at Joihoripur.
Harvesting rice was done by hand too until recently. These workers were at Makhalpur in 2015. During the last 10 years nearly all this work has been taken by machines owned by business people, employing only a driver and helper, and doing the work in a fraction of the time taken previously, The current generation of children needs education to learn new skills and enter new kinds of work.
In this dance in Dhrubotara’s annual Shishu Mela (childrens’ show) children are looking into a future in which there are opportunities, and also doubts and challenges. What will they become?
Dhrubotara consists of two small primary schools in the villages of Makhalpur and Joihoripur in Dhaniakhali Block of Hugli District, West Bengal, India. Most children are of the Shobbor / Sabbar Scheduled Tribe (ST) community, and other ST communities such as Mudi, Maheli and Santal. Many of the children are ‘first generation’ learners.
